Guacamole Variations and Tips
I simply love this homemade guacamole recipe, but if you want to change it up a bit or mix and match these ingredients below with the recipe I’ve provided…go ahead and get creative:
-
Garlic: If you don’t want to try your hand dicing the jalapeño, then add a few minced garlic cloves or a dash of garlic powder.
-
Pineapple: This fruit adds an amazing sweetness!
-
Pineapple Juice: The juice is also a lovely option to mix with lime juice.
-
Mango: Like the pineapple, this gives a sweet pop to the mixture.
-
Charred Corn: This can bring a unique depth of charred flavor.
-
Cotija Cheese: This cheese crumbled over the guac truly adds a nice creamy and rich decadence.
-
Chili Powder: I love to dash a pop of chili powder over the top of my finished guac for presentation and the slightest extra pop of flavor. Some people add ground cumin for an earthy balance as well.
Avocados: These can be VERY tricky to buy and time correctly. If you buy your avocados and they are already almost ready for use, you can pop them in the fridge to halt the ripening process. If you want to speed up the ripening process, you can place your avocados in a paper bag with an apple.
How to Store and Freeze
Refrigerate: A properly stored guacamole can last up to four days in your refrigerator.
When you store guacamole, you want to try to eliminate the amount of oxygen touching the dip. Oxygen reacts with the dip, oxidizing it, thus making it turn brown. The best way to avoid this and to keep your guacamole fresh is to:
- Press, tap, and smooth your guacamole down into an airtight vessel that matches the size and amount of guacamole you have. You want to try to compress and smooth the guacamole down in your vessel to eliminate the possibility of air bubbles and empty space for air to become trapped. The less negative space in your container, the better.
- Place a thin layer of lime juice, lemon juice, or olive oil over the top of your guacamole. This will act as a barrier between the dip and the air. (You can remove this liquid when you reserve it or just keep it and re-season to taste.)
- Place a piece of plastic wrap over the liquid barrier and press it tight over the guacamole. This provides extra protection to prevent air from getting in. Then, pop the container lid on and refrigerate.
Freeze: Follow the exact steps above and freeze your guacamole to make it ready and available for another use.
