Easy Guacamole Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy recipe:
Avocados: Avocados are the main show here, so make sure they are ripe, but not mushy, with no brown on the inside. Personally, I like my avocados slightly under-ripe than over-ripe.
Limes: The acid from the limes helps brighten the guac, really making it pop!
Jalapeño Pepper: I love a little heat to pack a punch in my guac. You can also used Serrano pepper, or any other hot pepper or a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce. If you’re worried about cutting, check out how to cut a jalapeño to master this fiery pepper.
Cherry Tomatoes: The pop of color and sweetness that cherry tomatoes bring to guac is everything to me! I love to use these tomatoes over diced tomatoes (usually Roma tomatoes) because they are sweeter and easier to cut. The sweet tomato juice also helps round out the consistency.
Red onion: You can use white onion, but I like the color, crunch, and flavor of red onion best.
Fresh Cilantro: This herb adds a freshness and earthy spiced bite to the guacamole that is simply a must.
Salt: Salt brings out the ingredients’ natural sweetness and adds to the dish’s flavor.

How to Make this Easy Guacamole Recipe
Here’s how you make this sensational best guacamole recipe that’s gluten-free, and has few net carbs and that’s packed with healthy fat and veggies. First, you want to start by getting your ingredients prepped and ready.
Scoop & Mash Avocados: Take a large bowl and cut and scoop out avocado flesh, and mash your avocados in a bowl with a fork or potato masher to your desired consistency. I like to create a smooth base first and get all the lumps out before I add in the other ingredients.
Add Lime Juice & Salt: I like to juice my lime next because the sooner you put the acid into the avocados, the greener and fresher your guac will stay. Place half of the lime juice into the avocados and add the salt and mix thoroughly. I like to reserve half of my lime juice to add after I add the rest of my ingredients so I can adjust and play with the consistency.
Chop Produce: Dice your jalapeño, cherry tomatoes, red onion, and cilantro so everything is nice and small. I like the texture that these elements bring, but I don’t like large chunks.
Add Everything Together: Mix in the veggies and chopped cilantro to the avocado and combine. Season to taste with sea salt and more lime juice if desired.
Guacamole Variations & Tips
I simply love this homemade guacamole recipe, but if you want to change it up a bit or mix and match these ingredients below with the recipe I’ve provided…go ahead and get creative:
- Garlic: If you don’t want to try your hand dicing the jalapeño, then a few minced garlic cloves, or garlic powder.
- Pineapple: This fruit adds an amazing sweetness!
- Pineapple Juice: The juice is also a lovely option to mix with lime juice.
- Mango: Like the pineapple, this gives a sweet pop to the mixture.
- Charred Corn: This can bring a unique depth of charred flavor.
- Cotija Cheese: This cheese crumbled over the guac truly adds a nice creamy and rich decadence.
- Chili Powder: I love to dash a pop of chili powder over the top of my finished guac for presentation and the slightest extra pop of flavor. Some people add ground cumin for an earthy balance as well.
Avocados: These can be VERY tricky to buy and time correctly. If you buy your avocados and they are already almost ready for use, you can pop them in the fridge to halt the ripening process. If you want to speed up the ripening process, you can place your avocados in a paper bag with an apple.
Guacamole Serving Suggestions
A popular way to serve this simple guacamole recipe is with crispy tortilla chips, crisp veggies, tacos, a burrito, or adding to any Mexican appetizers, or mains. I also like to add a heap of pico de gallo, mango salsa, with a dollop of sour cream. . You can also add a scoop of this homemade guacamole to:
Grain Bowls: Add a dollop to steamed rice, toasted pearl couscous, nutty bulgur wheat, or farro that’s super healthy as your base. Top the bowl with roasted vegetables, roasted peppers, roasted beets, roasted tomatoes, or some tomato confit.
Proteins: Serve a scoop with this Pan Seared Salmon, decadent Duck Breast Recipe, or a simple soft boiled egg.
How to Store and Freeze
Refrigerate: A properly stored guacamole can last up to four days in your refrigerator.
When you store this guacamole dip, you want to try to eliminate the amount of oxygen touching the dip. Oxygen reacts with the dip, oxidizing it, thus making it turn brown. The best way to avoid having your guacamole turning brown is to:
- Press, tap, and smooth the surface of the guacamole down into an airtight vessel that matches the size and amount of guacamole you have. You want to try to compress and smooth the guacamole down in your vessel to eliminate the possibility of air bubbles and empty space for air to become trapped. The less negative space in your airtight container, the better.
- Place a thin layer of lime juice, lemon juice, or olive oil over the top of your guacamole. This will act as a barrier between the dip and the air. (You can remove this liquid when you reserve, or just keep it and re-season to taste).
- Press a piece of plastic wrap over the liquid barrier and press it tight over the guacamole. This is extra protection to avoid air getting in. Pop your container lid on and refrigerate.
Freeze: You can follow the exact steps above and freeze your guacamole to have it ready and available for another use.
